The Brazilian Expeditionary Force (also known by the acronym FEB) was an airborne military force made up entirely of 25,834 men and women, which during the Second World War was responsible for Brazil’s participation alongside the Allies in the Italian Campaign, in its last two phases — the breaking of the Gothic Line and the final Allied Offensive on that front. This force (including all rotations and replacements) was formed by a complete infantry division named 1st Expeditionary Infantry Division (1st DIE), of which the 1st Army Division is heir,[1] which was sent with a reconnaissance squadron, the 1st Observation and Liaison Squadron (1st ELO), which was part of the FEB itself, and a fighter squadron of the 1st Fighter Aviation Group (1st GAvCa), which was part of the FAB. Its campaign motto, “The snake is smoking”, was an ironic allusion to what was said at the time of its formation, that it would be “easier for a snake to smoke a pipe than for Brazil to participate in the war in Europe”.
